Live in Manila on October 9,...

JAMES MORRISON The Awakening Tour

Live in Manila on October 9, 2012

A special evening is in store for Filipinos as the English singer-songwriter and guitarist James Morrison performs in Manila on October 9, 2012 at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

Morrison achieved worldwide success in 2006 with the release of his debut single “You Give Me Something.” His first album, Undiscovered, debuted at the top of the UK Album Chart and sold millions of copies, making him the biggest-selling British male solo artist in 2006. The album, which also has the hit singles “Wonderful World,” and “The Pieces Don’t Fit Anymore” won him a BRIT Award in 2007 for Best British Male Solo Artist.

He released his second album, Songs for You, Truths for Me in 2008, which entered the UK Album Chart at number three. The singles from the album reached the top ten of the UK Singles Chart: “You Make It Real,” and “Broken Strings,” a duet with Nelly Furtado.

Morrison’s is currently touring to promote The Awakening album, released in September 2011. As the title of his third and by far best album suggests, The Awakening is the sound of an artist coming of age. In his personal life, Morrison has become a father, while losing his own father after the latter’s long battle with alcoholism and depression. At the same time, Morrison, 26, has matured as a singer, songwriter and musician, enabling him to channel all of that emotion into his most accomplished collection of songs yet. “My first two albums felt like practice shots,” he says, “and now I’ve graduated. In many ways this feels like my first proper album.”

Fortunately, The Awakening has turned out to be the album that James Morrison always had the potential to make – at last a worthy platform for his extraordinary singing voice. “This time I wasn’t worrying about success at all, and that’s why it was really enjoyable. I didn’t feel I had to go for the big, loud notes all the time – I just sat back and sang how I felt and it all just came flooding out.”

The Awakening is a warm, live-sounding collection of classic but contemporary folk-soul songs. There are musical similarities with Morrison’s debut, but with added panache and self-belief. There are soaring strings, uplifting harmonies, soulful ballads and, in Slave to the Music, a hand-clapping dance floor groover – a new string to his bow. There are nods to Motown, gospel, country and a hint of Latin. Technically, Morrison remains one of the finest white soul singers, equal parts Stevie Wonder and Paul Young. But he is more than just a Big Voice – he sings from the heart. “To me, pop music is just great music that lasts for years,” he says. “Though there is the other side of pop, which is where you have a hit, but then, after it comes out, it never gets heard again. I never wanted to make that sort of music.”

He has retained the services of regular co-writers including Steve Robson, the man behind Take That’s “Shine,” Eg White (Duffy), Dan Wilson (Adele); as well as Toby Gad, best known for Beyonce’s “If I Were a Boy.” Ten of the 12 songs are produced by Bernard Butler – the acclaimed former guitarist in Suede. Butler, who also played guitar on The Awakening and is hailed by Morrison as “the director of the album”, has forged an impressive studio-based career, producing the likes of The Libertines, Tricky and Duffy .

The song “Up,” a duet with Jessie J has “hit” written all over it. It is one of two songs produced by Mark Taylor, who helmed “Broken Strings.” Morrison’s strained relationship with his father, who died last year from heart failure after a protracted and painful battle with alcoholism, inspired the lyrics for “Up” – and several other songs on the album.

The Awakening is full of raw emotion, but these are not “downer songs”, says Morrison. “Yes, some of it’s about dealing with shit – but it’s also about looking at yourself and what you’ve got around you, and weighing stuff up to keep yourself thinking positively. I think a lot of people will be able to relate to that, because that’s what life’s like, what relationships are like.”

Make sure to catch James Morrison as he serenades his Filipino fans for the first time.

James Morrison will be performing October 9 at the Smart Araneta Coliseum. Tickets may be purchased from Ticketnet outlets or the Ticketnet Website www.ticketnet.com.ph.
British alternative rock band Keane will have their first ever gig in Manila on October 2!

Keane is one of the biggest British rock bands in the world. Led by singer Tom Chaplin, the lineup is completed by pianist Tim Rice-Oxley, drummer Richard Hughes and bassist Jesse Quin. The band is known as the “band with no guitars,” because of their use of a piano (or a synthesizer) as the lead instrument in their songs. Rice-Oxley said in an interview that they tend to think piano-related music is boring and what they really wanted to do was try something different.

Keane achieved mainstream success with the release of their debut album, Hopes and Fears, in 2004. Lead singles “Somewhere Only We Know” is one of the greatest hits of 2004. The album sold over nine million copies worldwide, and won a Brit Award for Best Album in 2005. In addition, the band also won the Brit Award for British Breakthrough Act, voted by listeners of BBC Radio 1.

Success continued with their second studio album, Under the Iron Sea, which topped the album charts in the UK and debuted at an impressive No.4 on the US Billboard 200 chart. This album marked the transition from piano-driven songs in their first album to more progressive, sophisticated music, again without using guitars. Perfect Symmetry was their third album released in October 2008. It reached No.1 on the UK Albums Chart within a week of release, and No.7 on the US Billboard 200 chart. Earlier that year, both Hopes and Fears (number 13) and Under the Iron Sea (number 8) were voted by readers of the UK-based Q magazine as among the best British albums ever. In Perfect Symmetry, the band explored and moved from their established piano-pop sound and made use of guitars for the first time.

In 2009, Keane became the first band ever to broadcast a live show in 3D. Filmed at Abbey Road, fans bought 3D glasses along with the band’s new single at that time, “Better Than This.” Their fourth No.1 album, the Night Train E, released in 2010 could be considered a studio album since it had eight new songs.

The band’s latest album Strangeland, released last May 2012 debuted at No.1 on the UK Albums chart. This feat made them one of three bands in UK pop history to have five consecutive Number 1 albums. It’s the first album to feature bassist Quin as an official member.

In an interview with NME.com, Chaplin said, “The album has the vibe of earlier Keane. 2008’s Perfect Symmetry was a big self-indulgent and this record felt a bit more like we knew ourselves a bit better and what our strengths were.” Rice-Oxley added: “We wanted it be less production led and focus on making sure that the songs were great. You write a lot of shit songs to get to the good ones.”

Hughes said, “In many respects, it feels like the completion of a circle. On the album you have songs that draw upon the experiences we used to share as kids, growing up in Battle. You can never really go back, of course. We’re married. Some of us have kids. Once in a while though, after a good day, we’ll go to the local pub and talk about everything and nothing until it’s time to go home. Whatever it is that makes us Keane – that invisible glue – is still there. And you can hear it all over Strangeland.”

Since their debut, Keane’s music has won over the hearts of music fans all over the world, especially those in Manila. Catch KEANE live in Manila on October 2 at SM MOA Arena. Adam Levine –...

MAROON 5

LIVE IN MANILA

Band Members:

Adam Levine – Vocals

James Valentines – Guitar

Mickey Madden – Bass

Matt Flynn – Drums

PJ Morton – Keyboards

Great music will once again grace Manila grounds as Maroon 5 brings their Overexposed Tour with Special Guest: The Cab on September 18, 2012 at the Smart Araneta Coliseum. Tickets will be available on June 25, 2012. Tickets may be purchased ONLINE at www.ticketnet.com.ph or call Ticketnet hotline 911-5555 for inquiries.

Expect today’s hottest artist to knock everybody off their feet with a scorching performance together with The Cab, who recently gave an amazing show here in Manila last March with other great bands in a mini music festival called Smash Project 2012.

With millions of album sold worldwide, numerous chart topping hits, it’s not a surprise that Maroon 5 has now reached international prominence and recognition. Gone were the days where the band was just trying to fill small LA clubs. Now it’s arenas and stadiums at thousands strong. Yes, the band is now a worldwide sensation but has still managed to keep their feet on the ground and acknowledge, with humor, the fact that they are overexposed.

OVEREXPOSED – the title of Maroon 5’s latest album was an inside joke, a pre-emptive approach to what was inevitably going to be said of the band. With front man Adam Levine’s venture into TV, as a mentor for the hit reality show The Voice, Maroon 5 has reached that stage where their popularity has become increasingly hard to deny.

“It’s like, ‘We get it—we’re overexposed,’” Levine says with a laugh. “We’re just trying to preemptively go where the conversation is headed anyway. We figured we’d get there first.”

Their latest phenomenal hit “Moves Like Jagger”, a song that went down in history as one the most paid downloaded song, prompted the band to explore the idea of co-writing. The underlying message of their new album title captures the band willingness to take a step further in terms of music and took risks.

“I feel like we’ve been standing on the edge of a cliff for a long time,” Levine says. “We’re a band that’s always been close to being full-on pop, but that’s rooted in a lot of other things: rock, soul, funk, the list goes on. Overexposed is the first time we’ve ever completely embraced the idea of making pop music—of making songs for the radio. We just said, ‘Let’s not be afraid to do what we basically are.’”

Maroon 5’s fourth album is the result of that. Levine says that of all the band’s albums, Overexposed feels “both most and least like Maroon 5. There’s lots of traces of the past, but it also hints at a new idea,” the singer explains. “More than anything I think this record says that it’s always cool to try—that you should always be willing to take a step beyond whatever feels comfortable.”

The album features collaboration with well-known producers- Max Martin (the album’s executive producer), Benny Blanco and Ryan Tedder. Their single off their new album, “Payphone” – the incredibly catchy and sweet as pop song, features rapper Wiz Khalifa for the guest verse. Indeed they are heading over to the “pop” direction with heads held up high.

“I love how ‘Payphone’ seems like a such sweet song until the chorus comes in,” Levine says, referring to the part of that tune where he declares, “All those fairy tales are full of shit / One more fucking love song, I’ll be sick.” “It’s totally subverting the song in this way that makes you lean in and listen,” he adds.

The creation of their new album also brought about changes individually for the band members.

“There’s a new focus that’s set into us both personally and as a band,” Valentine adds. “We had such amazing experiences the first 10 years of this group, and I think we spent a lot of time enjoying it, which was great. But now it’s like, ‘Well, what do we do? We make records.’” The guitarist laughs. “Put it this way: In 2007 after the show we were definitely finding out where the party was. Now it’s more like, ‘Hey, let’s go finish that song.’ That’s what’s more exciting to us.”

Whether it’s a new approach to song writing or the band’s headed over to a new direction, there is still one thing that remains true: Maroon 5 continuously creates great music. This fact is undeniable. And with fans awaiting their return, Maroon 5 Overexposed Tour would be an affirmation of the fact the people all over will always and continuously support the great music that the band makes.

Great music is wonderful but it would be doubly incredible if it were heard live. Maroon 5 live in Manila with Special Guest: The Cab on September 18, 2012 at the Smart Araneta Coliseum. This event is presented to you by Midas Promotions in cooperation with Dayly Entertainment.
Jonny Quinn – Drums

Tom Simpson – Keyboard

Johnny McDaid – Piano, Rhythm guitar

This August, alternative rock band from Ireland, SNOW PATROL will give Manila a performance fueled with artistic passion and musical ingenuity.

Formed in 1994, university students Gary Lightbody, Michael Morrison and Mike McClelland started their musical journey by performing in local gigs at their hometown. Michael Morrison left the band before they were signed on to an independent label. As like most bands, the first few years were the hardest. They struggled to make ends meet, promoting their music out of their own pockets, all with the desire to share and have their music be heard.

They got their break when Polydor Records signed them on and with the help of producer Jacknife Lee, they released their first major label album Final Straw in 2003, with successful singles “Run”, “Chocolate” and “How to be Dead”. This gave Snow Patrol their first taste of mainstream success with their album reaching United States and selling over 250,000 copies. Extensive touring in promotion of the album then followed. During this time, the band toured together with U2 as opening act in U2’s Vertigo Tour. Their major breakthrough came with the release of Eyes Open in 2006, from which the hit song “Chasing Cars” came from. The worldwide recognition of the band’s remarkable talent and gift for earnest lyrics established their foothold in the music industry.

The popularity of the song “Chasing Cars” was highlighted further after it was featured in the highly popular TV Series Grey’s Anatomy and received nominations for Grammy Awards as Best Single in 2006 and Best Rock Song in 2007 and Brit Awards Best Single also in 2007. Eyes Open became UK’s Best Selling Album in 2006. Their second single “You’re All I Have” hit the airwaves with its appealing melodic hook and sincerely written words. They also released another song “Signal Fire” which was featured in the Spiderman 3 Soundtrack and was played in the credits.

Snow Patrol’s songs echo a contradicting sense of sweetness and edginess. They have a loyal fan base that keeps to their music as anthems of life, love and hope. They appeal not entirely to the mainstream market but to a select few who understands and relates well to the songs penned by Gary Lightbody. Their musical style varies from the almost melancholic “Chasing Cars” to the incredibly catchy and upbeat “Take Back the City”, but still maintains that trademark sound made even more memorable by Gary Lightbody’s brooding baritone.

In their latest album Fallen Empires, Snow Patrol seeks to experiment with their sounds and musical approach, taking creativity into the next level. It may seem like a departure from their usual sound but this collection is still identifiably Snow Patrol.

The band’s upbeat, feel good, almost pop like songs made them very popular with teenagers and young adults. Their music has all the qualities one would expect from artists in their genre – catchy, melodic and relatable. Their latest album Bad Habits showed a much more aggressive guitar play and refined songwriting that’ll make their fans love them even more.

William Beckett

Formerly from the pop punk band The Academy Is…, William Beckett is out to show the world what he can do. LIVE IN MANILA

This band knew how to save a life;...

THE FRAY

LIVE IN MANILA

This band knew how to save a life; with genuinely written songs that tug at every heart strings, they were able to connect with people and on a few occasions might have saved someone’s life through their heartfelt songs. On June 23, 2012 prepare for a celebration of love, sorrow and life as THE FRAY gives Manila a one night of auditory pleasure.

Formed in 2002, American pop rock band from Denver, Colorado started as a worship band and was initially composed of Isaac Slade and Joe King then joined later on by Dave Welsh and Ben Wysocki. They made waves in 2005 with their breakthrough single “How To Save A Life”. The single reached Top 3 in the Billboards Hot 100 and was certified double platinum by RIAA. The album, How To Save A Life, where the same titled song came from also brought forth the hit “Over My Head (Cable Car)”. The band was then nominated for Grammy Awards for Best Pop Performance by a Duo or a Group and Best Rock Performance by a Duo or a Group in 2007. These singles propelled the band into commercial success and international recognition.

“How To Save a Life” was featured in the hit TV Series Grey’s Anatomy and Scrubs, making it one of the most played and widely recognized song in that 2006-2007. The song’s inspired lyrics came from an encounter Isaac Slade had with a boy with drug problems and realizing that all the boy need was support from his friends and family. People related so well with the song it opened up variety of interpretations, all in all, the song was able to touched the hearts of many and thus solidify The Fray’s ability to reach out to their audiences at a deeper level.

Their single “You Found Me” from their self titled sophomore album The Fray, debuted at #28 at the Hot 100 and peaked at #7. “Never Say Never” also from their second album was featured in the movie Transformers 2: Revenge of the Fallen, allowing them to increase their loyal fan following worldwide. With the release of their latest single the upbeat and ear friendly “Heartbeat” from their latest album Scars and Stories, The Fray once again displayed the emotional side of rock and their ability to connect to people.

The Fray’s musical approach is composed of piano driven, mid tempo tunes with a laidback feel. Their music is easy to listen to and the lyrics are highly relatable and heartfelt. Some compared the band to the likes of Coldplay and Keane primarily because of the piano driven tracks that leads into power ballads, though they cited The Wallflowers, Counting Crows and U2 as few of their influences. Isaac Slade vocal style gave The Fray the distinction it deserves. The band’s ability to render poetic, moving and sincere words into their songs is their strongest point, that and never lacking in melody and catchy hooks.

Be one of the first to witness The Fray first time performance here in Manila on June 21, 2012 at the

New Mall of Asia Arena.
